This zine delves into the complex and often misunderstood world of drugs, exploring their impact on our senses, emotions, and societal perceptions. Through six vibrant collages, I've tried to capture the essence of a "high," pushing the boundaries of visual stimulation while maintaining a captivating aesthetic.
These collages go beyond mere representation, seeking to evoke the spectrum of emotions that drugs can trigger. While some offer fleeting moments of euphoria, others lead down dark paths of negativity and addiction. Symbols of sadness, despair, and substance abuse are woven into the fabric of the artwork, creating a nuanced and thought-provoking experience.
In contrast, my illustrator drawings adopt a different approach, focusing on the word "high" and its connection to class and drug use. These playful illustrations feature characters whose heads are replaced by objects associated with drug terminology and wealth. I intentionally chose characters symbolizing the upper class, particularly those associated with cocaine, as this demographic holds a significant presence in Australia's cocaine scene.
This zine is not a glorification of drug use, but rather a critical exploration of its multifaceted nature. By examining the sensory overload, emotional rollercoaster, and societal complexities surrounding drugs, I hope to spark meaningful conversations and encourage responsible choices.
